10 Ways to Let Your Light Shine

In Matthew 5:16, the Bible tells us to “let our light shine before others” so that we can inspire them to praise God. But how exactly can we do it? How can we share our faith with others in a way that feels both natural and impactful?

You don’t really have to give grand gestures to make a difference in the lives of the people around you. Sometimes, a simple smile or a genuine compliment might just do the trick. Here are 10 more practical ways to let your light shine that you can try today.

How to Let Your Light Shine

Be Authentic

You might think that you need to be like someone else so as to share your faith with others, but the truth is, you are good enough the way you are. Instead of comparing yourself with others and trying to blend in, how about just using your unique abilities to share your faith? Just because you are not as eloquent as your pastor shouldn’t stop you from letting your light shine- you could try singing a song or even sharing a funny story.

Spread Kindness

Sometimes, the most powerful way to show Christ’s love is through random acts of kindness. Wherever you go, try to treat everyone with kindness. Offer a genuine compliment to a friend, greet a stranger with a smile, hold the door for someone behind you, and if you can, bail out your neighbour who is struggling financially.

Be a Good Listener

People want to be heard and understood sometimes, especially when going through a rough patch as it reminds them that they are not alone and that someone cares for them.

Always try to show interest in the lives of the people in your life by listening when they talk about their day or their interests and see how much of a difference it will make to them. When a friend is going through a hard time, be there for them, and listen to them openly and without judgment. You’d be surprised by how much good it does to them.

Practice Gratitude

Don’t take anything or anyone for granted but instead be thankful for every blessing, both big and small, that God sends your way and appreciate the efforts of everyone around you. You’d be pleasantly surprised at how a simple “thank you” can brighten someone’s attitude towards you.

Lead by Example

Always try to set a good example to those around you. Don’t just say that you’re a Christian, show it through your actions. Be honest in your words and dealings, try to keep your promises, and live a life that reflects Christian values; a life that others might want to emulate.

Stand up for What’s Right

In a world full of injustice and people who only care for themselves, don’t be afraid to be the voice of reason and stand and speak up for what is right and just. Be the person who defends a person getting bullied and protests against injustices. However, when speaking up try to do so respectfully and not out of anger or spite.

Be a Source of Hope

Life gets tough sometimes and with all the challenges and negative news around us, we all need some hope to keep going forward.

Be that person who always offers a word of encouragement to others whether at work or at home. Besides offering kind words, also try to offer practical help for those who might need it by volunteering your time to charitable causes near you.

Share Your Gifts With Others

God has given each one of us a unique skill or talent to use in serving others in our communities. Whether you are a good musician, an excellent cook, or a good organiser, don’t keep your gifts hidden but use them to bless the people around you.

Forgive Freely

Holding on to grudges can only dim your light and make your heart filled with negative energy. If you truly want to let your light shine, try to practise forgiveness just like Jesus did. Even when someone offends you really badly, rather than lashing out, take a deep breath and choose forgiveness.

Live a Life of Worship

Finally, don’t forget to build your relationship with God. Pray always, make time to read and study the Bible, and participate in worship services both at your church and with your family. When your life is centred in Christ, His love will overflow in you and naturally touch the lives of those around you.
