What does the Bible say about Chakras?

In a world where many are increasingly adopting New Age beliefs, chakras are becoming popular each passing day. A chakra is believed to be an energy in the human body that impacts people’s mental, emotional, physical, and emotional well-being. Its roots can be traced back to ancient Eastern traditions where they believed that there are seven chakras in the human body.

They believe that chakras connect with specific discs along the spine or nerves to vitalize the body and the mind. Chakras have helped people calm anxiety and emotional roller coaster. They are believed to help people with sleeping disorders find rest and calm. Many people, including Christians, have embraced this practice. But is it compatible with the Christian faith? Is there any relationship between chakras and the power of the Holy Spirit that wells within us?

So, What Does the Bible Say About Chakras?

As Christians, we believe that there is an invisible power that works in each one of us, especially in times of need. This power is not from an unknown source but from the Spirit of the Lord. God’s Spirit dwells in us and He comforts us when we are weak, weary, and sad. Additionally, the Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf before God when we cannot find the right words to express ourselves. Could He be the One mystics refer to as a chakra? Is the power of the Holy Spirit chakra? Let’s find out.

“You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.”

Romans 8:9

While it is believed that chakras are energy points in the human body, Christians believe that their source of strength comes from the Spirit of God that lives in them. The Holy Spirit dwells in our hearts to renew our strength when we feel weak and to grant us the grace to navigate every situation.

Mystics believe that the center of the chest is where the heart chakra is located and it plays a significant role in matters of love. They also believe that the heart chakra can block and cause heart problems to the victim or make them have issues with love.

A person with a blocked heart chakra may find it difficult to connect with others. And, this leads to feelings of isolation, loneliness, and insecurity. There is no such thing as the Holy Spirit getting blocked within our hearts. In fact, He is our companion and our closest friend when we feel alone and isolated. He is our guide and provides us with wisdom when it comes to matters concerning relationships.

Another energy center is the solar plexus chakra which mystics believe is connected with our self-esteem and confidence. As Christians, our self-esteem and confidence come from our identity as children of God. We find confidence and courage in the knowledge that we belong to God who is the creator of all things on earth. Our confidence does not come from some imaginable power or energy but from the Spirit of God.

The throat chakra is said to make an individual gossip, speak without thinking, or experience difficulties while speaking out their minds when it blocks. But in the Bible, we are told that the words that human beings speak come from their hearts. Matthew 12:34 reads, “For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” Whatever a person speaks is not determined by the well-being of the throat chakra but by the things they fill their hearts with. If we fill our hearts with the teachings of Jesus, they are what will come out of our mouths. On the other hand, if we fill our hearts with ungodly things, our mouths will speak evil things.

Mystics believe that the throat chakra helps people to communicate well and air out their thoughts verbally. But in Christianity, they believe that a person may grow too weak to express themselves in prayer before the Lord. In these moments, the Holy Spirit steps in to communicate to God on their behalf.

Romans 8:26 reads, “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” The Spirit of God communicates the things we cannot express through words in a language that God can understand. Our inability to verbally express ourselves is not a result of any blockage in our physical system but a weakness that can happen to anyone.

People who believe in chakras believe that the crown chakra is the wellspring of every other chakra. In other words, it is like life flows from it since it is connected to every other energy center. However, the Bible says that the wellspring of our lives is the heart.

It is the organ that connects all other aspects of our lives and God instructs us to guard it well. Proverbs 4:23 reads, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

“See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.”

Colossians 2:8

The fact that the Bible does not talk about the existence of these ‘energies’ in our bodies may be a sign that they are deceptive philosophies. The devil, at his best, can use anything to alter the truth in God’s word and replace it with false ideologies that seem true. As we imagine these ‘energies’ in our system, which spirit are we connecting ourselves with? Jesus warns us to watch out so that no one can take us captive with practices that depend on human traditions.

Can we trace back the origin of chakras to the Bible or does it originate from some practices of some communities? If they cannot be traced back to the Bible, then they could be philosophies of human traditions. And, this is what Jesus is instructing us to avoid in Colossians 2:8.

“I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”

Luke 10:19

God has given us power and authority to overcome every power of darkness that comes our way. Any misfortune that befalls us results from the work of the enemy who seeks to destroy us. Misfortunes and body malfunctions are not caused by the blockage of some energy but by the devil. We have the power to rebuke him and his works upon our bodies through prayer and fasting. Additionally, we can use the Word of God to fight against evil forces operating in our bodies.

“My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.”

Proverbs 4:20-22

Chakras are believed to promote healing and bring a sense of peace and security. But what the Bible teaches is totally different. The Bible teaches that God’s Words bring healing and good health to the body. People who believe in chakras go through some kind of meditation to activate the energy in their bodies to promote healing.

The words these people chant as they meditate are not in the Word of God. But for us Christians, we are instructed to pay attention to God’s Word and keep it within our hearts. It is the power in God’s Word that brings us peace and healing to our bodies.

As we navigate through health problems, do we want to meditate on God’s Word or do we want to chant words that are not found in the Bible? Do we want to speak God’s Word over our bodies and declare healing through God’s Word?

Joshua 1:8 says, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Healing, success, and every other good thing comes from God. When we meditate on His Word and do everything written in it, we will lack nothing.

“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from Him.”

Psalms 62:1

God is our source of refuge and strength and we can find rest in Him anytime we feel anxious and weak. He renews the strength of every person who puts their hope and trust in Him. Our peace of mind and calm are not dependent on some ‘energy centers’ but on the presence of God in our lives.

He provides us with a peace that no one in the world can offer, not even psychics or mystics. Psychics and mystics cannot comprehend the peace that God provides. When our souls are burdened and troubled, we can always find rest in Him.

Our anchor as Christians is the Word of God and our helper is the Holy Spirit. With the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit working in us, we can navigate any situation. The world may try to confuse us by referring to the power of the Holy Spirit as ‘mystical energy’ but we must be vigilant. Let us not grieve Him by associating Him with philosophies of whatsoever kind.
