What Does the Bible Say About Tarot Cards?

It is often said that whatever happens in our lives is a manifestation of what already happened in the spiritual realms. In other words, events of the spirit world precede the unfolding of the same events in the real or physical world. Something good or bad exists in the spirit world first before it manifests in the physical realm.

These concepts have sparked curiosity among many people in the world. And, this is what led to the emergence and spread of tarot cards. Tarot cards are believed to give insights about the future or what exists in the spiritual realms concerning us. They are used by psychics, occultists, and mystics to unfold the mysteries and the hidden things of the spirit world. These people use supernatural powers with the help of some spirits to fortune tell.

But is it right for a Christian to ask tarot card readers to reveal to them what their future holds? Is it right for us to read tarot cards or believe what we are told about them? In this article, we will dive deeper into the Scriptures and unravel what God says about tarot cards and tarot card readers.

What the Bible Says About Tarot Cards

There is no word like tarot cards in the Scriptures. They don’t exist in the Bible and they are not mentioned anywhere. However, there are many Scriptures that provide teachings relating to tarot cards. These teachings are meant to enlighten us on whether using them is good or not. Note that the Word of God does not condemn.

Rather, it provides teachings that can reveal God’s truth to us and convict our hearts to choose the right path. Therefore, as we try to find out what the Scriptures say about tarot cards, keep in mind that no one is here to judge or point fingers but to help one another learn.

“When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider this: God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, no one can discover anything about their future.”

Ecclesiastes 7:14

Why do people run to tarot card readers to consult with them about the mysteries of their lives? One of the main reasons is the burden and challenges that people go through in their lives. Sometimes we may face a series of challenges that can leave us uncertain of what the future holds. These uncertainties draw us into states of worry, confusion, stress, and anxiety.

At this point, many resolve to seek the help of tarot card readers so that they can look into their lives and tell them what will unfold in the coming days. But this is not what the Bible asks us to do when we face challenges. The Bible provides many teachings that can act as a guide and a source of comfort and direction when challenges come our way.

In Ecclesiastes 7:14, we are reminded that bad times happen to everyone. It is only that sometimes it is our time to go through challenges and other times it is the turn of others. So, what does God advise us to do when we are in a season of challenges? Does He advise us to run to tarot readers? From the Scripture above, the Bible clearly says that no human has the ability to tell our future.

Our future is in God’s hands and He alone can tell what will unfold tomorrow and the days to come. Ecclesiastes 8:7 reads, “Since no one knows the future, who can tell someone else what is to come?” When life seems hard and the going gets tough, we are called to run to the One who holds our future in His hands. He knows the end from the beginning, (Isaiah 46:10), and He alone can change the conditions of our lives. His purpose for our lives stands regardless of whether we read tarot cards or not.

“Then the Lord said to me, “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries and the delusions of their own minds.”

Jeremiah 14:14

The fact that someone can use a tarot card to foretell your future does not mean that they are from God. Psychics and mystics do not rely on the power of the Lord but on delusions that exist in their own minds. These delusions are not natural but come from some unknown spirits that are not of God. Acts 16:16-20 talks of a young demon-possessed woman who foretold people’s future to earn money. Peter had to cast out the demon from her.

When we consult people to read tarot cards for us, we open the door for strange spirits to operate in our lives. If these spirits can read our minds and see through our lives and tell the future, then they can access every other aspect of our lives.

In 1 Peter 5:8, the Bible warns, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

Giving strange spirits access to our lives through tarot cards can be very risky to our spiritual lives. The Bible tells us that we need to watch out for the devil, who can use anything or anyone to attack us, (2 Corinthians 11:13-15). How well do you know that person who is reading tarot cards for you? And, how much do they know about you? We may be putting our lives at risk in the name of reading tarot cards.

“So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your interpreters of dreams, your mediums or your sorcerers who tell you, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon.’ They prophesy lies to you that will only serve to remove you far from your lands; I will banish you and you will perish.”

Jeremiah 27:9-10

Tarot cards may unravel information that contradicts the perfect will of God for our lives. In Jeremiah 27:9-10, God warned the King of Israel against listening to fortune tellers since their message contradicted what He had planned for them. In Jeremiah 29:11, God says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

This Scripture tells us what God has planned for us; it says that God plans to give us hope and bring us to prosperity. But if you visit a psychic today and ask them to read a tarot card for you, they may tell you the exact opposite of this. They can tell you that something very bad will happen in your life.

God’s message is of hope, but the message from a tarot card can be a heartbreaking revelation. The best person we need to run to when we are filled with uncertainties in our minds is God. In Him, we can find a message that will encourage us and grant us hope as we wait for the future to unfold what it has.

Furthermore, in Philippians 4:6-7, God invites us to seek His face in prayer whenever we feel anxious about the future or anything else. He says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Our anxieties and worries are not supposed to push us to tarot cards but to a life of prayer and supplication.

“Do not eat any meat with the blood still in it. Do not practice divination or seek omens.”

Leviticus 19:26

Tarot card reading is often associated with divination and occultism. Yet, God warns us not to practice them. Whether we read tarot cards for other people or consult tarot card readers to read them for us, God is against it. He terms it as something that is ungodly and even warns the Israelites not to be lured by their neighboring countries to practice it.

In Leviticus 20:6, God declares His judgment upon those who practice divination, occultism, and fortune-telling. God says, “I will set my face against anyone who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute themselves by following them, and I will cut them off from their people.”

Conclusion

We have gone through the Scriptures and found out what the Bible says about tarot cards. But we should not get scared if we have been using tarot cards for any reason among the many uses that people use them for. In Acts 8:9-13, we are told of a man named Simon who practiced sorcery and always boasted of his power.

However, when he and the people who followed him heard and understood the message of God, they left everything and gave their lives to Christ. The message is here with us today as it was with Simon and the people that followed him. It is up to us to make a decision and take a step that will lead us to paths of righteousness.
